Pedestrian safety improvements completed on Turton Road at Broadmeadow
24th April 2012

Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) will this week complete work to improve pedestrian safety on Turton and Griffiths roads at Broadmeadow.

Member for Newcastle, Tim Owen said RMS has been working closely with Hunter Venues and provided $200,000 towards the joint funded improvements.

“Events at Hunter Stadium lead to increased pedestrian activity and unfortunately many pedestrians choose to cross these busy roads away from the traffic lights, which is very dangerous especially when there is increased traffic,” Mr Owen said.

“The project involved installing pedestrian fencing in the median on Turton Road between Lambton and Monash roads, as well as from 40 metres north of Monash Road to Griffiths Road.

“Access points have been maintained in the pedestrian fence at the Young Road intersection and the driveway into Hunter Stadium between Monash and Young roads.

“Pedestrian fencing has also been installed in the median on Griffiths Road from Turton Road to 150 metres east of the intersection.

“A pedestrian refuge on Turton Road near Monash Road was relocated to a wider median as part of the work.

“This project will improve safety for pedestrians on these busy roads,” Mr Owen said.
