About Newcastle

Newcastle is the largest regional city in Australia, situated in the heart of the stunning Hunter Valley region. Newcastle not only boasts beautiful beaches and harbour, but the world's largest coal handling facility.

The State Electorate of Newcastle includes the idyllic and untouched Stockton Peninsula; the community-focused suburbs of Wickham, Islington, Tighes Hill, Mayfield and Maryville; the beautiful and historic suburbs of Carrington, The Hill and Cooks Hill; the vibrant and energetic atmosphere of The Junction; the colourful suburbs of Broadmeadow and Hamilton; the superb coastline along Merewether and Bar Beach; and the family-oriented communities of Lambton, Adamstown, Georgetown and Waratah.

On top of these splendid attributes Newcastle is also the commercial and industrial focal point of the region, incorporating the world's largest coal port and it is the engine room, from a resource perspective, for the State of New South Wales.

Significantly, the Awabakal and Worimi peoples are recognised and acknowledged as traditional custodians of the land and waters of the Newcastle area.

The earliest Aboriginal reference to the naming of Newcastle is Muloobinba (meaning Mu-lu-bin [edible sea fern] -ba [place of)].

Lieutenant Shortland was the first white man to explore and name the place, and it is his original landing at Signal Hill and Stockton on September 9, 1797, which Newcastle has chosen to mark as the founding of the city.

The State Electorate of Newcastle falls within the Newcastle Local Government Area and Federal Electorate of Newcastle.
